Read that again: the flight costs more than the entire month on the ground. That's the honest version, and it's still a bargain. $1,850 is what plenty of people spend on one week at an all-inclusive; here it covers the flight and thirty days.

  • When to book: the fare aggregators put the sweet spot at roughly 9 weeks to 3 months before departure. Last-minute fares ran $1,050-1,415 when we checked.
  • The cheapest real fares we found: $688-838 round trip on Cathay Pacific, Asiana, ANA, and Turkish Airlines.
  • Flying from the West Coast? LAX round trips typically ran $811-1,207.

Where this budget breaks
  • Old Quarter tourist strips run 20-30% above these prices. One block off the main drags fixes it.
  • Airport arrival is the first budget decision of the trip: bus #86 is ~45,000 VND ($1.75); a taxi is $15-20.
  • The best stuff is free: Hoan Kiem Lake at 6am, train street (go early), Old Quarter wandering, St. Joseph's Cathedral.
  • Data before you land: the receipt's $0.50/day is a local Viettel eSIM bought in town. If you'd rather have bars the second you land, an Airalo Vietnam eSIM installs before you fly; you pay a few dollars for the head start.
